Welcome to PreLGM

South American Perspectives of Deep Time, Ecology and Human Presence before the Last Glacial Maximum is an international workshop devoted to one of the most challenging questions in American archaeology and Quaternary science: what was happening in the Americas before the Last Glacial Maximum?

Rather than focusing on a particular discipline, archaeological site or geographical region, the workshop is organised around a time interval. By bringing together archaeologists, palaeontologists, geologists, palaeoclimatologists, ecologists and other specialists, PreLGM aims to promote an integrated understanding of human presence, megafaunal communities and environmental change during the Late Pleistocene before the LGM.

The meeting follows the spirit of the New Discoveries in the American Paleolithic workshop held in Borrego Springs, California, in 2019, while expanding its scope to South America. It is conceived as a discussion-oriented meeting, with invited plenary lectures, thematic round tables, oral and poster presentations, and ample time for scientific debate.

Hosted by the Arroyo del Vizcaíno Research Team and the Universidad de la República (Uruguay), PreLGM seeks to strengthen international collaboration and foster new perspectives on one of the most fascinating periods in the history of the Americas.
